Someone help me understand...

Weddings.

I don't understand weddings.

Sure, the happy(?) couple want to let everyone know that they are taking vows together. I get that.

Since you're all there, let's have a party afterward. I get that.

Starting a life together requires lots of stuff that you maybe never had before, so wedding gifts are a reasonable idea. I get that....

What I don't get though is why we would be invited to come the day after the wedding to watch the bride and groom open 5,000 wedding gifts. I don't get that at all.

A bunch of people have driven up to an hour to sit in a tiny apartment and watch two people who have just got married open countless presents. Frankly, those two people would probably rather be in a state of undress that they have never been allowed in together before (i.e. they'd be naked if it wasn't for all the spectators) .

It's not like the onlookers are going to get anything from it, it's not like they even gave more than one of the presents.

Someone help me understand this.

What's the excitement in watching people open presents?... I just don't get it.

it does seem pretty strange!

Strange is a very good word for it.

Apparently there were a more people there than presents.... How does that work?

Oh, sweet fancy Moses! That's just ridiculous! Stupid, stupid, stupid!

I'd be ready to punch someone in the kidneys. Seriously.

I think its just a relational thing. We want to celebrate the good fortunes of others and share in their momentous occasion. I don't know about you, but for me, in general I'm all for a good (or even a strange) reason for people to share life together. Especially significant moments in life.

I've never heard of this. I can see watching them open presents at the reception, but not at home the day after!
Newlyweds I know never got dressed except to go outside for the first few months, so this would have kind of put a damper on things.

Big AL and I would have told them to come back later and we'd show them pictures...of the gifts.

U we didn't do this but I think we did open a bunch of the presents at the reception. I can't remember it has been nearly 10 year. I am officiating my first wedding later this year so I'll try to pay more attention.

Along those lines, does anyone know where I can get or rent the cleric robes and big hat from the Princess Bride? I really need them for the rehearsal.

We went through the gift opening last week, but it was only immediate family and whoever from the wedding party who was awake to show up. It's just what the kids do now. The amount and quality of the gifts were insane. I never got that much stuff.

I have decided after 36 years I need to register again and get new stuff, so when you guys figure out when my bday is, you can send me new pans. Is it tacky to do that? Or do we need to renew our vows? Ron Burgundy would never go for a couples shower unless involved a weed whacker or a lawn edger. Or a new boat. Just sayin'

@Nick - I don't know what you're talking about - haven't seen the movie, remember? Would an old graduation gown do?

Candy you really need to go watch this movie. Your life s incomplete and you don't even know it.

Candy, I didn't realize there was anyone left in the English speaking world who hadn't seen it...

"Mawige, mawige is what bwings us togever today. Mawige, that bwessed arrangement, that dweam wivin... a dweam."

Candy - Whatever your plans are today, you need to make sure you go get that movie. Buy it. Do not rent. You will never be the same after watching it. And if you don't love it, I'm not so sure we can be friends anymore.

I think I have literally watched that movie over 50 times. It is lifechanging, and I'm only a little kidding.

I really don't understand this gift opening thing either! My brother did it and there was only family, so that was okay, but I have a bunch of friends getting married this year that also want to do this. Why? I'm in the wedding party for two of them, which means that I will have two days taken up by preparation, rehearsals and the wedding, and now they want a third day so they can open their presents in front of me? I don't understand, and I'm not too interested.

Also, when you have a couple that you know has waited for their wedding night, you can't help but think "It was your wedding night last night" if you see them the next day. No thanks! If I ever get married, this will not be happening. Btw, what happens if you hate the gift that someone gave you, and that person is present? I'm not a very good actor.

Wow. Long comment. Clearly this issue touched a nerve. I need to go now. And maybe watch the Princess Bride.

Whether or not I watch that movie will be determine by whether or not there is a gift opening the day after. You guys are unmerciful. How am I going to get my 20 mile bike ride in and fix dinner AND watch a movie today??

I really don't know what to add. The morning after my wedding, I wasn't exactly lamenting that my friends weren't around to watch us open gifts. I was glad to be alone with Bob. I did have the grace to not sent postcards from our honeymoon in Hawaii saying "Glad you're not here....." to people. That would have been tacky. Maybe worse than a morning after party... ;-)

Helen,
I'd rather get that post card than attending a morning after party. ewww.

Candy,
You need a TV you can watch while making dinner. Problem solved.

I've never heard of this either. And we were married, like 3 weeks, before I wanted to face our family and friends. Because, you know, they knew what we'd been up to the last 3 weeks.

I think I'd rather watch paint dry than watch a couple open quesadilla makers and their 9th place setting of the EXACT SAME PLACE SETTING...but that's just me.

Katdish, you can be my shower wingman anytime...I think we'd have a great time.
