For You On-the-Go Christians

I love working in ministry.  It gives me "hook-ups", if you will, to things you lay people couldn't dream of getting your hands on.  For instance:  what do the rest of you do if you're on a road trip and suddenly feel God calling you to join Him and your fellow travelers in communion?  You probably have to wait until you get back to your church, thus putting God off and disappointing Him mightily.

But those of us in ministry...well, we have that covered.

(My friend Timm, a youth pastor, thought the bottom one was Christian brass knuckles.  Those would be handy for a youth pastor, I think.  Just sayin)

I think we should all have these in our cars.  What if we have one of those "Ethiopian Eunuch" moments like Phillip did?  What if we lead a fellow traveler to follow Jesus, but there isn't a body of water around to baptize him?  No problem.  Just pull into a rest stop, and have communion.

I get the non-profit rate and free shipping.  Let me know how many of these babies I can put you down for.

Ash Wednesday Song

Okay friends, tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. I probably will have a serious explanation on my blog tomorrow, but I saw this video on Ironic Catholic's site, and I had to share it with FOTTSP.
I hope no one is offended by it. I know I wasn't...

Tweeting with your imaginary friends

Photobucket

I love Twitter. Where else can you talk with so many imaginary people at once without people thinking you're crazy? Okay, maybe they still think you're crazy, but at least you're social and crazy. Good times.

The Trinity Ring

This came in the mail yesterday. I know, I was stunned by its beauty as well. As you can see, this is not a ring that just anyone can order. If you need the hook-up, you just let. me. know.

And guys, nothing says "Happy Valentines Day" like this ring. Maybe score bonus points with your sweetheart by pairing it with the Lord's Prayer Cross Necklace. You're welcome.

Patiently

Just thought I would add yet another entry into the blog carnival!

Bonus? I was TOTALLY at this concert! Fourth row - do you see me? It was at the Summit (now referred to as Joel Osteen's church - Grrr...)

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go find my hair brush and air guitar...

Monday, February 8, 2010

Because even SNL refused to air this

So Ashton Kutcher hosted Saturday Night Live this week. And apparently he did one of those fake commercials for them that they decided NOT to air. Fortunately, NBC DID put it online.

So I present to you... the next wave in social networking:

Sorry/You're welcome.

The Super Bowl ads follow FOTTSP

I'm outraged, we were ahead of this trend but will anyone give us credit? I think they owe us some royalties for this. Next think you know awesome cat will be staring in the Super Bowl halftime.

Hey everyone! Steph did a Twitter Ho-down post!

Photobucket

To honor this momentous occasion in which Steph is gracing us with at Twitter Ho-down post, I'm posting this post early. We all need the extra time to savor her writing and be thrilled with her presence in the Ho-down. But in all honesty... WE'RE NOT WORTHY!!! Now that that's been said, sign up with Mr. Linky below once you've finished your own less-than-Stephmazing post. No pressure or anything.

Don't look for Katdish here

Photobucket

Okay, Katdish announced on Twitter just recently that she wouldn't be doing a Twitter Ho-down post this week. I've heard that before somewhere... Click away below to see what everyone else had to say this week. And maybe Katdish, too (since she's not the boss of herself). You just never know about these things around here.

The real reason...

You might wonder what it was in Katdish's past that turned her against clowns. I mean, clowns are happy, right? How could anyone hate a clown? But after doing some searching, I found this video taken at one of Kat's early birthday parties...

Mystery solved.

Happy Birthday, Wolfie Mo

Today is Mozart's birthday. So in celebration......

Once upon a time, during the 1991 Mozart Bicentennial, the Mozarteum decided to open its vaults and archives to the general public. It went without saying that a great number of tourists, scholars, music lovers and Mozart affectionados took all of the guided tours.

As one very young man and his parents were passing through the hallowed halls, the tour guide actually took them into an inner sanctum where teams of archaeologists and anthropologists were furiously busy constructing clay and plaster likenesses of the great WAM, with varying degrees of success.

"Those are pretty good!" The very young man exclaimed.

"Yes," the tour guide nodded proudly. "They are based on castings made from a skull believed to be mozart's. You an see the skull for yourself, under the glass case."

The battered, pitiful skull looked dolefully back at them from under a brass name plate, which had been firmly nailed into the cranium. What was even more curious was the even smaler skull beside it.

"Whose skull is that?" The very young man asked.

"Oh, that one is the skull of Mozart as a child."

Insight into the madness that is my household

This awesome commercial has been out a while, but it will be legendary in my house for decades to come. Not a week goes by we don't quote something from it. That and lyrics from random 80's rap songs and the quotes by the dead terrorist. Yeah, we're weird. At any rate, enjoy!

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

that's my King

I'm not usually a very serious guy, and I don't tend to enjoy serious videos, so this type of post from me is rare. Now, I'm sure everyone here has seen some video with Lockridge's famous, "That's my King," sermon soundbites. I know I've seen a lot. But I was asked to show such a video for a rock concert we had for our youth group last month, so I began to search for a new one. This is the one I found that moved me the most. It had more of the sermon than any other that I have seen, and the music was more moving to me. Of course, I'm really into heavy metal, so I like my praise music a little rockier than some (or most). I often worship in my car to Disciple and Demon Hunter. So if you like Jesus, and perhaps a little bit of rock, this video is for you. If you don't like rock music, but you still like Jesus, perhaps this VIDEO would be better suited for you.

The Wisdom (and Wit) of King Solomon...

Okay, I have often said my mom loves Bob to pieces, but I don't mean that literally!!! Here is a joke that I saw on Happy Catholic today. Enjoy.

Two women came before wise King Solomon, dragging between them a young man in a three-piece suit.

“This young lawyer agreed to marry my daughter,” said the first woman.

“No! He agreed to marry MY daughter,” said the other. And so they haggled before the King until he called for silence.

“Bring me my biggest sword,” said Solomon, “and I shall cut the young attorney in half. Each of your daughters shall receive a half.”

“Sounds good to me,” said the first woman.

But the other woman said, “Oh Sire, do not spill innocent blood. Let her daughter marry him.”

The wise king did not hesitate a moment. “The attorney must marry the first lady’s daughter,” he proclaimed.

“But she was willing to cut him in two!” exclaimed second woman.

“Indeed,” said wise King Solomon. “That shows she is the TRUE mother-in-law."

I suppose tomorrow I shall be grateful that my mom and my husband get along so well....

Ho Ho Ho - A holiday Ho-down

Photobucket

Okay, so there was no Twitter Ho-down last week. It's not my fault. I asked someone, not mentioning any names (Katdish), if she'd be doing a twitter post since it fell on Christmas, and she said no. Imagine my surprise when I found that the certain someone had, indeed, done a twitter post on Christmas. So while I was celebrating the birth of Baby Jesus, someone else was TWSSing. I'm not saying that she's not holy or anything, but yeah, she's not holy. Let's all pray for her, shall we?

Now on to the Ho-down! Sign up below with Mr. Linky, who was also celebrating the birth of our Lord last week, and have fun with us. You know you want to! It's a great way to start the New Year.

Praying for Matt Chandler

Hey guys...I know we'll resume snarky soon enough. But for now, can we take some time as a body of believers who know the power of Jesus to pray for Matt Chandler, pastor of The Village Church in North Dallas? I've felt so compelled to pray for Matt ever since his elders started letting us know of his seizure and subsequent brain tumor diagnosis.

I don't know if the need to pray for Matt is that he's: a) a pastor who fearlessly preaches Christ crucified b) is pastor of an Acts 29 church and is a member of the Acts 29 network like my church is c) because I always connect with those struggling through cancer. At any rate, Matt is on my heart and our prayer is powerful as we ask for God's will for Matt. I believe satan took a swipe at Matt because he's dangerous for the enemy's kingdom. And I believe God is going to get some enormous glory for this journey, regardless of how He decides to heal Matt.

you can't treat Santa that way

I don't care if he was rough on jolly old St. Nick. Jack Bauer has saved America enough times to stay on the nice list permanently.

Merry Christmas.

In these tough economic times, people are looking for answers. Many feel there only way out of financial ruin is declaring bankruptcy. While that certainly is a viable option, you should never do it like this:

In the spirit of bad Christmas songs...

Since our buddy Jeff saw fit to kill our Christmas spirit, I thought I'd help. JK! This got RAVE reviews when I emailed it to the FOTTSP ladies. Enjoy/Sorry!

Monday, December 7, 2009

Oh, holy...

My friends are pretty evenly split on whether they like Christmas music or not. I tend to lean towards listening to hip, updated version of Christmas classics...kind of like this guy's rendition of "Oh, Holy Night." I think if all of my friends would listen to him, they would love Christmas music like the rest of us.

Grief - Hold On

Hold on
Hold on to yourself
for this is gonna hurt like hell

Hold on
Hold on to yourself
you know that only time will tell

What is it in me that refuses to believe
this isn't easier than the real thing

My love
you know that you're my best friend
you know I'd do anything for you

my love
let nothing come between us
my love for you is strong and true

Am I in heaven here or am I...
at the crossroads I am standing

So now you're sleeping peaceful
I lie awake and pray
that you'll be strong tomorrow and we'll
see another day and we will praise it
and love the light that brings a smile
across your face

Oh God if you're out there won't you hear me
I know that we've never talked before

Oh God the man I love is leaving
won't you take him when he comes to your door

Am I in heaven here or am I in hell
at the crossroads I am standing

So now you're sleeping peaceful
I lie awake and pray
that you'll be strong tomorrow and we'll
see another day and we will praise it
and love the light that brings a smile
across your face...

Hold on
hold on to yourself
for this is gonna hurt like hell

Special thanks to Steph at the Red Clay Diaries

So I was looking for a video response to a comment Steph made on my blog (See the comment and response here) and found a treasure trove of videos that must find their home here. I'm gonna ration them out, butt here is the first installment.

He Wrote the Psalms, He Wrote the Psalms...

It's been a while since anyone posted here, except of course the infamous anonymous who keeps popping up in an ancient post. So I decided to go even more ancient, and wrote a poem about David...

He was alive a long time ago..
and he wrote the very first Psalm..
He had put words and melodies together
that to the soul today
is still like a balm..

He wrote the Psalms that make the whole world sing...
He wrote Psalms about God and that kind of thing...
He wrote the Psalms that make worshippers cry...
He wrote the Psalms he wrote the Psalms....

His home lies deep within God,
Even though he messed around with Bathsheba
He repented and was forgiven
And no longer needed to feel like an amoeba.

He wrote the Psalms that make the whole world sing...
He wrote Psalms about God and that kind of thing...
He wrote the Psalms that make worshippers cry...
He wrote the Psalms he wrote the Psalms....

Oh his music made him dance,
in the Spirit, and not perchance,
and he played some harp, so Saul could sleep...
God said David was a man after His own heart,
That's more than just a start..
It's from God, It's from he, It's from God, It's from he,
it's an ongoing symphony...

He wrote the Psalms that make the whole world sing...
He wrote Psalms about God and that kind of thing...
He wrote the Psalms that make worshippers cry...
He wrote the Psalms he wrote the Psalms....

What? You think it ought to be set to music? Thank you! Me too! Try out this tune with it...

Trading Symptoms

Tim Hawkins has some funny stuff. I share his sentiments on the side effects of some drugs being advertised. I trust my doctor to prescribe something appropriate if I complain about something, but there is no way I am going to be putting ideas in his head. You know, like maybe I prefer uncontrollable vomiting to joint pain...
"Well, maybe Helen needs her elbow so badly that the uncontrollable vomiting doesn't matter to her. She IS asking for it..."

Oh, yeah. I stole this from Stacy from Louisville. You know other people always find it before I do...

don't fight it

Hi, I'm Jeff. Katdish decided I should be allowed to post here. So blame her when it gets bad.

Let me tell you a little about me. I'm stubborn, and I fight with God a lot when He tries to move. I claim to like change, but only if He's changing someone else somewhere else. Some Christians would think of verses to help them but I like to use youtube. I know this is what will happen to me if I fight Jesus, so I try not to pick fights with Him often.

I Love All Of My Children. Kind Of.

Dear FOTTSPers,

You know that I'd rather you spent all of your interwebbing time re-reading my blog, but if you need to take an occasional break from all the scintilating spirituality, may I recommend emailsfromcrazypeople.com?

It may not be scripture, but it is full of beautiful and uplifting stories. Like this one:

David writes, “This was an email in response to our University’s latest mailing of our Alumni Magazine. I have removed all specifics to protect the guilty.”

You should know that before I throw in the trash your stupid “alumnus” magazine, some of us have good education and recognize evil when we see it. Where is the report questioning the awarding of degrees in Sociology, Women’s Studies, and the like? Where is the article questioning the renaming of the Business Administration school to something from outer space like management? There isn’t such a thing as “management”, it’s just a title awarded to employees instead of giving them a pay raise. Come on Uof__, get with reality. Jeepers. You’re looking like a bunch of fools.

Look, its time to realize that woman aren’t people. They just repeat yesterday all over again each day. If you listen to their conversations, you will note the absence of verbs. They can’t do life. They can’t do Earth. You shouldn’t have all your staff positions occupied by non-humans. It shows in your Alumnus magazine. Fake nonsense is not a good idea.

Class of ‘65

Love,

God

Where has the week gone and what have you got to show for it? Oh yeah, tweets. Lots and lots of tweets. So how about writing a post about them then linking below with Mr. Linky? It'll be like a walk down memory lane for those suffering from short-term memory loss...

Gifts for all of you!

I am a HUGE fan of Katdish and her Sky Mall posts. The items in Sky Mall remind me that although people may have money, they don't necessarily have taste.

So imagine my happiness when I see that Neiman Marcus has released their 2009 Fantasy Holiday catalog!

One day, if I win the lottery and lose my mind, I'm buying all of you one of these.

And then I'll fly you all into my ranch (first class of course!) and we'll race. No pressure for letting me win since I bought you such a cool gift. No, really. No pressure.

Now if you'll excuse me, that lottery ticket ain't gonna by itself...

Another year older, another year wiser. Well, another year older at least. I searched high and low for the perfect birthday gift for you, but then remembered you already had a Snuggie, so I got you this instead. You're welcome!

Tell Maniacal Katdish a Joke

Okay, so here's the scoop. People were conversating (yes, I know that's not a real word) on twitter this morning and Katdish was manically laughing about something. Peter Pollock suggested I make a picture of her laughing maniacally.

Alas, I could not, but I'll do you one better. I combed the interwebs and found this rare footage of Katdish laughing, how else, maniacally...so I thought we could turn this into a little game.

Here's how it works.
  1. You tell Maniacal Katdish a joke in the comments
  2. Then hit the play button on the audio player.
  3. She thinks all your jokes are downright HI-larious. With me so far?
Okay, I'll go first.
Hey Maniacal Katdish! Did you hear the one about the woman who gets onto a bus with her baby?

The bus driver says, "That's the ugliest baby that I've ever seen. Ugh!"
The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her, "The driver just insulted me!"

The man says, "There's no call for that. You go right up there and give him a piece of your mind. Go ahead... I'll hold your monkey for you."

Now, it's your turn! Make Maniacal Katdish laugh with your best joke. You will be the hit of the party (and even if you're not, Maniacal Katdish still thinks you're great).

Please don't ask me why Maniacal Katdish sounds as if she's been smoking for 50 years because I do not know the answer to such a question. You could ask Maniacal Katdish, but she's only going to laugh at you.

Since this may be the final post I ever get to do here before my blog privileges are revoked, I would just like to borrow a line from a friend-- I'm sorry/you're welcome.

Because I know there hasn't been much particpation from fottsp members on it. I thought maybe you all weren't aware of it, and that a Life is Funny post on fottsp would fix it. Besides. This blog has more followers than mine, so maybe even if fottspers know but choose not to participate, the fottsp followers may. Please?

So, the other day I almost purchased a Christmas craft magazine while in line at the grocery store. I know it is too early for Christmas, but my mom likes to do crafts. It's not a lifelong interest, just one she's had since being couped in. I decided not to buy the magazine however because I didn't have a chance to take a look and see if the crafts were doable for her.

Then today, Bob and I were at Borders, and I saw the magazine I was thinking of getting. I started thumbing through it, and was disappointed to find it was more about decorating than crafts. And if that weren't bad enough, I found out that I don't have elegant taste. Every single room featured in that magazine was elegant, and I hated it. If I had been in that room with the hostess, I'd have been polite enough to say...

"My. That IS elegant..."

I would not have mentioned that my taste isn't elegant. I thought it was. Until looking at that magazine, my idea of elegant Christmas decor was having small flashing multicolored lights instead of the large bulbs, and making sure baby Jesus was only lit up at night.... But it turns out that my idea of elegant is actually tacky. And you know what? I kinda feel sorry for people who prefer elegant..

Now, if any of my fellow fottspers prefer elegant Christmas decor to flashing multicolored lights, just let katdish know so that she can revoke your blog priveleges.....KIDDING! I'll love you anyway. And the worst thing I'll say about you is that you have elegant taste...

The blog carnival is called Life is Funny, not Life is Hysterical, so this post is funny enough. Trust me. I have been participating for months. Why don't you? She's obviously not particular....

This is what I call super elegant.

Welcome to Canada! (Bienvenu!)

Photobucket

It's time for another Twitter Ho-down folks! But before we get started, here's a little something you should see in case you missed it:

The story Marni didn’t blog about the other week for some strange reason

marni71 So a lady comes into my office today. As soon as she opens the door, she screams and runs back out... Then she slowly comes back in and says "I'm sorry, I'm just really afraid of taxidermy!" Now I'm thoroughly confused because there are no dead animals in my office. And I'm looking at her all WTFrak?! Then she looks over me head at what she thought was taxidermy and says "Oh, it's just your curtains!" Welcome to my life.

Now on to the carnival! Sign up below on Mr. Linky. And just so you know, Mr. Linky is afraid of taxidermy, too.

What a Clown!

You wouldn't believe how many videos making fun of Ronald McDonald are on Youtube. I had no idea that he could inspire people to such creative depth.

Still, I didn't think any of it was funnier than his first commercial. I know, I know...I have changed over the years, too....But wow, has his fashion sense improved!

Twitter Ho-down - The Return of Helen

Photobucket

Blog your tweets then sign up below on Mr. Linky. By the way Helen, I think Mr. Linky was pining for you while you were gone, too.

I Had a Really Cool Title for This Post in My Head, But I Forgot What It Was, But Trust Me, It Was a Doozy!

And now, we interrupt this hilarity, for a serious post. Why not do a serious post on my own blog? Well, I could claim that it is to give Peter P. 's book giveaway and Be the Church blog challenge more exposure, since fottsp has more readers, or I could tell you the truth, that the friend I bring up reads my blog, and would see her flaws rather than mine, and she doesn't need that right now. So, we'll just go with the first reason.

The other day, a friend from college called to wish me an early Happy Birthday. It was great to hear from her. We don't talk as often as I'd like. Sometimes I call and get the machine. I always say "Hi, this is Helen, calling just to say "Hi!" ......HI!". Always. Even the day when I called because I found out I'd NEVER have a baby, and I needed HER ear.

Now, she often doesn't get back to me for weeks. I always assumed she was too busy for me and my small little life. I felt too proud to say "What the H-E-Double Hockey Stick took you so long to get back to me?" I also felt too proud to tell her why I called a month later. If she doesn't need me, then I don't need her!

Guess what. Long story short, I confided my problem to her recently, and yesterday told her of Bob and my plans for moving on. She has been struggling with the VERY SAME issue I have, except doesn't have the support system I do, and has been avoiding all calls for a long time because she is depressed. Depression is like that. It makes you shut people out when you need them. I thought I was depressed just because I wanted to die. Still, I wasn't so depressed that I didn't want to talk to anyone. But I did let pride get in my way. I did not let her in that day, and for years, not because I was too depressed to talk to her, but because I was too proud to confide in her if she didn't feel like calling me.

If I had told her, she may have felt less alone. Sure, I would have wept buckets on her shoulder, but perhaps that would have freed her to let me in. But I didn't, and she suffered alone. I have mom, Bob, and others whom I've leaned on, and I've known that I'm not alone. She didn't have that, because I was too busy playing nah, nah, nah nah, nah.

BTW, I am not feeling all down on myself for not being perfect. I see I could have been a better friend, but then, who can look back on forty years and find they have never behaved in such a way as they regret? I do want to turn this around so that I learn something though, and think that Peter P.'s blog challenge gives me the opportunity to share that.

That something is that to Be The Church, one needs to leave their pride behind them. I ought to have not read my own insecurities into her behavior. If I reacted with less pride, well, it may have been overwhelming for her, but at least she would have seen her own struggle playing out, and perhaps would have shared her own feelings and we could have leaned on each other a little.

I learned that Being The Church is as much letting people help you as being helped....

Peter, please don't give me the extra entries because of this post. I don't deserve it, because it is about how I have failed to Be The Church, not how I have succeeded. I'm not all bad. I've done some things right, too. I'll share that on my own blog early next week, and then you can give me the extra entries, okay?

Oh, and btw, you can check out Peter's blog challenge thingy at this website and have the opportunity to write on how you think we should Be the Church. I don't know if the extra points for wishing me a Happy Birthday has expired or not, though.

God bless you!

Not sure how much trouble I'm gonna get in but oh well it seems like it might be funny and Moses is bound to tick him off before anything bad happens.

Wow, now that's a long title. Did you know they limit how long your title can be? Yeah me neither. Anyways, I know God has a blog just posted but I'm gonna put this up too because it is funny and God appreciates funny.

Also, Moses made me do it ... yeah that's what I'm going with.
